E.L. James Strikes Again?

I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about E.L. James’ newest addition to her “50 Shades” dynasty: GreyGrey

Grey is a revisit of the first book in the series: 50 Shades of Grey, told from Christian’s perspective. However, this isn’t the first time Christian’s voice has been heard in the series. In the last book of the trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed, James includes a 50-page teaser, written from Grey’s perspective. Although this “teaser” was originally written to raise money for a fundraiser to help raise awareness for childhood cancer, James has since decided to expand the selection and publish the entire story as a new novel.

The book made news last week, when reporters broke the story of a copy going missing in Kent, England. It seems that someone just couldn’t wait to get their hands on the steamy new novel… but it doesn’t look like they’re sharing. A quick search didn’t give much indication that the book is being pirated. If it is, folks are doing a great job keeping it quiet… there’s not much chatter on social media regarding an unauthorized “early release” either.

James’ books have already netted her a fortune… $95 million, to be exact. Not bad for a series that started online as a Twilight fan fiction piece! If history repeats itself, her new piece is set to snag her millions more. The current “50 Shades” readership is only 20% male, according to this Bowker poll, and telling the story from BDSM connoisseur Christian Grey’s point of view may bump that percentage by quite a bit.

How will the switching perspective fare? It remains to be seen, but if Stephenie Meyers’ short piece Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edward’s perspective) is any indication, fans are hungry for a new point of view. The rage was palpable when 12 chapters of the novel were leaked online back in 2008, but the content was gobbled up nonetheless. Luckily, James’ novel hasn’t yet experienced that kind of unintentional early release.

Paperback and Library Binding pre-orders on Amazon will be shipped tomorrow, with the Kindle edition being released at that time as well. Are you as excited as we are? Let us know what you’re expecting, over on our Facebook page!
